Harry, you wanted some facts about our family. This is copied from a letter from Aunt Agnes Mendenhall at Absarokee, Montana, written July 20, 1948. (She is a sister of my father's):

Your Aunt Ann McCreery Dailey is getting pretty old. She was 91 years old last Feb. Ann was born at Valley Forge, Penn. in one of Washington's soldier's cabins. It was a three roomed cabin and so low Father had to stoop to get in. (He was not very tall.) Mary was born in New Hampshire and Ann and Anthony in Penn. All the rest of us were born in Iowa.

Aunt Agnes was the first school tearcher at Springdale, Montana (east of Livingston) and she and Aunt Ann died the same year (in the 50's). Aunt Agnes was the last one to die of my father's family.

Aunt Ann McCreery Dailey, was the only one of the family who had a son who was a medical Dr. She is the only one I ever heard of who had a birthday on February 29th. She lived to be past 95, and swept her floor and made her bed every day.

I am enclosing this crude looking family tree drawing . The names are correct and some of the dates. The others are approximate. Some dates I know by deduction and others -- for instance my Dad once told me that his brother Tom was 7 years older than he and that Rich was 11 years older than he. Aunt Ann's age -- 1948 - 91 = 1857 (Aunt Ag told me this. ( FootNotes )

Kate Makel married John Cosgriff -- we think they met here in America. John C. we think, was probably named John Cosgrave in Ireland. He worked at an old castle in County Cork and drove a horse and cart each day To the village to shop for the castle. He was also a gardener and chore man. He saved all his money and often did without lunch to get enough to come to America. ( My brother Robert told me the above as my older brothers stayed with their grandparents while my mother taught school or did work around the house.) Rob said John had a brother, but they had trouble over property so John changed his name.

FootNotes

Written By: John Robert --- If Aunt Ann was born in 1857 her birthday could not be Feb. 29th. It must have been 1856.
